# How to Choose a Teleprompter App: A Feature Checklist

*Published 2026-10-12*

Pick a teleprompter app by use case: check scrolling control, cue line, mirror mode, voice follow, remotes, platforms, offline use and pricing catches.

The right teleprompter app is the one that fits how you record or present, not the one at the top of someone's list. Check nine things: how scrolling is controlled, the cue line, mirror mode, voice follow, remote options, script formatting, platforms, offline use and any extras you need. Then read the pricing page for what the free plan leaves out. This guide gives you a checklist you can run against any app, organised by use case.

A disclosure first. We make a teleprompter app too, Magic Teleprompt, so this guide doesn't rank anything. Near the end we run our own app through the same checklist so you can see how it works in practice, and hold us to it.

## What a teleprompter app actually does

A teleprompter app shows your script as large text that scrolls on its own, so you can read while looking at the camera or the audience. You'll see it called many things: teleprompter software, a prompter app, autocue software, a script reading app, a script prompter, a digital teleprompter or an electronic prompter. They mostly mean the same thing: software that turns your text into scrolling text for speech, running on a phone, tablet, computer or a screen under teleprompter glass.

The basics are the same everywhere: paste text, press play, the text scrolls. The real differences are in control. How is speed set? What happens when you pause? Can you start and stop without touching the screen? Can the text be mirrored for glass? Does it work without Wi-Fi?

## Is there a best teleprompter app?

Not one that's best for everyone. When we looked at the top-ranking "best teleprompter app" pages in October 2026, almost all of them were written by app makers who put their own product first. Teleprompter.com, for example, places itself first in its [roundup of free teleprompter apps](https://www.teleprompter.com/blog/best-free-teleprompter-apps). Those pages still contain useful facts, but the ranking is not neutral.

The more useful idea in those pages is how they frame the decision. SayScroll treats the main choice as [voice-follow versus a fixed scroll speed](https://sayscroll.com/blog/best-teleprompter-apps). Ghost Prompter concludes that the right app [depends on your recording environment](https://ghost-prompter.com/best-teleprompter-apps-2026/). Both points hold, and together they are a better starting point than a top-ten list.

### Reading teleprompter app reviews and Reddit threads

App store reviews and forum threads are good for spotting bugs, crashes and slow support. Read them with your own setup in mind. A complaint about a missing feature only matters if you need that feature. A glowing review from a phone vlogger tells you little about a church service on a glass rig. We didn't analyse Reddit for this guide. Instead, the checklist below gives you things to test yourself, and most apps have a free tier or a trial you can test on.

## Start with your use case

- **Phone or social video:** you record on a phone and want the text close to the lens. Look for smooth or voice-follow scrolling. If you want a single app for everything, check whether it records video too.
- **Desk recording and video calls:** Zoom, OBS, screen recordings, webinars. Look for a window you can place near the webcam. If you share your screen, look for a prompter that stays hidden from screen share. ShareSpeak, VoicePrompter and FlowPrompter all market this ([ShareSpeak](https://sharespeak.co/best-teleprompter-windows), [VoicePrompter](https://voiceprompter.app/blog/top-10-teleprompter-software.html), [Teleprompter.com's roundup](https://www.teleprompter.com/blog/best-free-teleprompter-apps)).
- **Beam-splitter glass rigs and studios:** mirror mode is required. You'll probably want a remote or an operator, and possibly output to an external display.
- **Stage, church and live events:** hands-free control (foot pedal, clicker or operator), large text, and reliability when the venue Wi-Fi isn't.
- **Actors and rehearsal:** a teleprompter app for actors is often a rehearsal tool. Look for notes you can mark as not to be read, and voice follow so you can practise at a natural pace.

## The feature checklist

### 1. Scrolling control: auto scroll, speed and timing

Every app auto scrolls. The question is how precisely you can control it.

- **Speed control:** can you type an exact value or see it as words per minute, or is there only a rough slider?
- **Timed scrolling:** can you tell it to finish in a set time, so a two-minute segment actually ends at two minutes?
- **Countdown and clocks:** a countdown before the start, plus elapsed and remaining time.
- **Manual override:** tap to pause, drag to go back a line when you stumble.

### 2. A cue line, and how the text sits on it

The cue line (or reading line) is a marker showing where your eyes should rest. Without one, your eyes slowly drift down the screen and your gaze drops away from the lens. Check whether you can move it to the top, middle or bottom, whether you can make it visible without being distracting, and whether the text glides past it or jumps. Most comparison pages skip this, but you'll notice it within ten minutes of reading.

### 3. Mirror, flip and rotate

On a beam-splitter rig, the screen lies under angled glass, and the text you see is a reflection. So the app must mirror the text horizontally, or it reads backwards. Some rigs mount the display differently and need a vertical flip or a rotation.

If you plan to use glass, this is non-negotiable, so check which plan includes it. As of 11 October 2026, Teleprompter.com lists horizontal and vertical mirroring under its [Pro plan rather than its free Starter plan](https://www.teleprompter.com/pricing), and its [features post](https://www.teleprompter.com/blog/teleprompter-software-features-and-more) says the same. The App Store listing for [Teleprompter App Lite](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/-/id910014071) says mirror mode is for Pro users.

### 4. Voice follow vs fixed speed

Voice follow listens to you and scrolls as you speak. Fixed speed scrolls at a set rate and you keep up. Voice follow suits people who change pace, pause for effect or go off-script. Fixed speed is predictable and doesn't depend on a microphone hearing you in a noisy room.

If an app offers voice follow, ask:

- Does it pause when you stop or improvise, and pick up again when you return to the script? PromptSmart's VoiceTrack, for example, is [described as doing this](https://www.saasworthy.com/product/promptsmart).
- Does it track your words across the whole script, and does it scroll back if you restart a line? These are points [VoicePrompter's comparison](https://voiceprompter.app/blog/top-10-teleprompter-software.html) uses.
- Does it work offline, and does speech recognition run on your device or on a server?
- Which plan is it on?

### 5. Remotes: phone, Bluetooth clicker or foot pedal

Comparison tables often just say "remote: yes." These are quite different tools:

- **Phone remote:** a second device controls the prompter. Useful when someone else operates, or when you're across the room from the screen. Check how it pairs and what it shows you.
- **Bluetooth clicker or presentation remote:** usually acts like keyboard keys. Handy for presenters who already use one for slides.
- **Foot pedal:** keeps your hands completely free, useful for musicians, preachers and anyone holding props or notes. Many pedals have a keyboard mode.

Check whether keyboard shortcuts can be remapped, so the buttons on your device do what you expect.

### 6. Script formatting and notes you don't read aloud

Formatting matters more than it seems. Bold for emphasis, colour for a change of speaker, and notes like "pause here" or "slide 4" marked so they don't get read out. Many vendors focus on file import instead; Teleprompter Pro, for example, lists [Word, PDF, TXT and RTF import in its paid tier](https://teleprompterpro.com/pricing). Import is useful, but also check what formatting survives the trip.

### 7. Platforms, downloads and the browser

Choose by the devices you'll actually use. A native download can use operating-system features such as media keys or external displays. A browser-based app runs almost anywhere, including Windows laptops, Chromebooks and Android tablets, with nothing to install. If you're on Windows, one Windows-focused roundup lists ShareSpeak as a native app, plus the free open-source Imaginary Teleprompter and the browser-based EasyPrompter ([ShareSpeak's Windows guide](https://sharespeak.co/best-teleprompter-windows)).

### 8. Offline use

Ask this before any live event. Browser-only tools may need a connection: teleprompter.works argues that [Speakflow can't be used where Wi-Fi is weak or missing](https://teleprompter.works/blog/best-speakflow-alternative/). It was also the only top comparison page we found with a [separate offline column](https://teleprompter.works/blog/best-teleprompter-app-complete-comparison/). Check whether a web app can be installed and keeps working after the first load, and where your scripts are stored.

### 9. Extras: recording, screen share and external displays

Some apps are video suites. A rival describes BIGVU as a prompter bundled with [AI captions and eye-contact correction](https://voiceprompter.app/blog/top-10-teleprompter-software.html). Others are prompters only and pair with your camera app, OBS or a real camera. Decide whether you want one tool that does everything or a prompter plus a separate recorder.

Other extras to check if you need them: hiding from screen share, a floating window over other apps, and clean output to a second screen. Teleprompter Pro, for example, lists a [clean feed over HDMI or AirPlay in its paid tier](https://teleprompterpro.com/pricing).

## Pricing catches to check before you pay

All prices below were read on 11 October 2026 and change often. Check the vendor's live page.

- **Watermarks on the free tier:** Teleprompter.com's free Starter plan [records with a watermark](https://www.teleprompter.com/pricing); its Pro plan removes it.
- **Core features behind a paywall:** mirror mode, as shown above, and sometimes remotes or voice follow.
- **Monthly vs yearly prices:** Speakflow's own page says ["Plus from $15/mo"](https://www.speakflow.com/compare/bigvu). Other pages quoted [$19 a month](https://www.teleprompter.com/compare/teleprompter-vs-speakflow) and [$16 a month](https://teleprompter.works/blog/best-speakflow-alternative/). One explains the gap as [$15 a month billed yearly versus $19 billed monthly](https://sharespeak.co/speakflow-pricing). Always check the billing period.
- **Several apps under one brand:** PromptSmart has Lite, Pro and + apps plus an "Extended" add-on, according to a [competitor's page](https://sharespeak.co/promptsmart-pro-pricing) that calls this confusing (a biased source, but worth checking yourself).
- **Subscription vs one-time purchase:** Teleprompter Pro offers [$59.99 a year or $159.99 one-time](https://teleprompterpro.com/pricing). ShareSpeak lists a [one-time $14.99](https://sharespeak.co/best-teleprompter-windows).
- **Trial length and refunds:** Teleprompter.com lists a [7-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee](https://www.teleprompter.com/pricing).

## A worked example: Magic Teleprompt against the checklist

Here is our own app, Magic Teleprompt, run through the same list. It's not the same product as an App Store app called ["Magic Teleprompter"](https://apps.apple.com/es/app/teleprompter/id1468329050) from the makers of Teleprompter Pro.

- **Scrolling:** smooth scrolling; speed can be adjusted, typed in or shown as words per minute. Timed scrolling ("Finish in mm:ss"), a countdown, elapsed and remaining clocks, tap to play and drag to scroll are all on the Free plan.
- **Cue line:** top, middle or bottom, with several marker styles and a highlight bar. Snap to Lines centres the nearest line on the cue line and glides line to line.
- **Mirror, flip and rotate:** mirror, flip, and rotation at 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, all on Free.
- **Voice follow (Pro):** scrolls word by word with your speech and coasts at your pace when you pause or ad-lib. On Mac, iPhone and iPad it uses Apple's on-device speech recognizer, and audio is not sent to us.
- **Remotes:** keyboard shortcuts, presentation clickers and keyboard-mode foot pedals such as AirTurn, PageFlip and iKKEGOL. A phone remote paired by QR code is part of Pro.
- **Formatting:** rich text, plus "don't read" notes that show to the operator but aren't read. Rich paste and document import.
- **Platforms:** the [web app](https://app.magicteleprompt.com) is live. The Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV apps are coming soon. There's no native Windows or Android app; the web app runs in their browsers.
- **Offline:** the web app can be installed and works offline after the first load.
- **Pricing:** Free costs $0 with no account, ads, watermarks or time limits. Pro is $8 a month billed yearly ($96 a year) and adds voice follow, the phone remote, cloud sync and more. There are 14-day trials and no lifetime plan.
- **What it doesn't do:** no built-in video recording, captions or AI script writing, and no direct AirPlay streaming. A Mac video-call mode hidden from screen share is planned for the Mac app.

## How to test any teleprompter app before you commit

1. Paste a real script, including one note you don't want to read aloud.
2. Set the device up where you'll actually use it: on the camera, by the webcam or under the glass.
3. Read at a fixed speed, then try timed scrolling if the app has it.
4. If there's voice follow, pause, ad-lib and skip a line to see how it reacts.
5. Connect your clicker, pedal or phone remote and try every button.
6. Turn on mirror mode if you use glass, and confirm it's on your plan.
7. Turn off Wi-Fi and reload the script.
8. Read the pricing page for watermarks, billing period and what's paid-only.

## Bottom line

There's no single best teleprompter app, only the best fit for your setup. Pick your use case, run through the nine checks, then read the pricing page with the catches in mind. Test with a real script on the real device before you pay. If you want to try that with ours, the [Magic Teleprompt web app](https://app.magicteleprompt.com) is free with no account.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a simple teleprompter app?

A simple teleprompter app lets you paste a script, press play and read scrolling text, without accounts or setup. Most apps can do this; the differences show up in speed control, mirror mode and remotes. If simplicity matters most, look for a browser-based app or a free tier you can open and use straight away.

### What is an autocue app?

Autocue is another name for a teleprompter, common in the UK. An autocue app is the same thing as a teleprompter app: software that scrolls your script so you can read it while facing the camera or audience. The same checklist applies to apps sold under either name.

### Is there a teleprompter app for actors?

Most teleprompter apps can be used by actors, mainly for rehearsal and self-tapes. Look for notes you can mark so they are not read aloud, and voice follow so the text keeps pace with your delivery. Test how the app handles pauses and ad-libs before relying on it.

### What is a teleprompter generator or teleprompter maker?

These terms usually describe tools that turn your text into scrolling prompter text, often in a browser. In practice they are teleprompter apps. Check whether the tool saves your scripts and works offline, because some free browser tools do not.

### What is a speech scrolling app?

A speech scrolling app shows your speech as scrolling text so you can deliver it without memorising. Some scroll at a fixed speed you set, others use voice follow to scroll as you talk. Decide which suits you before comparing apps.

### What was the best teleprompter app in 2022?

We don't rank apps, and lists from 2022 are likely out of date because features and prices change often. Use a current checklist instead: scrolling control, cue line, mirror mode, voice follow, remotes, platforms, offline use and pricing catches. Then test the apps you shortlist with a real script.
